Warning: Toxic chemicals may be lurking in your laundry detergent.

Unfortunately, some of the most effective laundry detergents are loaded with artificial fragrances and other chemicals that can lead to skin irritation, trigger allergic reactions, and even harm the environment.

The laundry detergents below all have clean ingredients and eco-friendly certifications, were dermatologist tested, and were free from all the “bad stuff” like phthalates, phosphates, petroleum, and artificial dyes and fragrances.

In this list you will find: liquid, powder, pods, sheets and cloth diaper and wool wash as well!

Charlie's Soap is in the top 2 for favorites.  It comes in a powder or a liquid. Powder for warm/hot and liquid for cold/cool.

I love the brand Better Life for all of their products. They make a great liquid detergent (unscented). I personally prefer liquid because it works better for cold or cool water. I have a lot of cotton clothing that I wash with cool water.

Attitude takes first place for the best in cold water detergent. It is a liquid detergent, again go for the unscented version.

I also use Seventh Generation free and clear, its wonderful to be able to find this in stores. This is going to be the best in-store find. Again make sure it is "free & clear".

For the best detergent pods, try these Dropps. No measuring, no scooping, toss in and you're on your way to nontoxic cleaning power for your clothes.

Botanical Origin is a plant-based detergent with 4 enzymes in their formula, to get out your toughest stains. Their options do not include fragrance-free however if that is important to you.

Meliora is a small business with a people and planet friendly laundry powder! It is free of all the things, stick with the unscented version.

Molly's Suds is usually touted as the best product you can buy. Here are my thoughts on it. It is a powder, supposedly a powder is easier to wash with because it rinses out of your clothes easier. I personally find that it leaves a "mineral" smell on my clothes. So, I do not use it on my clothes but I will use it for sheets and towels, etc. These items I wash in hot water so its great for a powder that needs the heat to dissolve.

Biokleen, oxy bleach plus is a bleach/oxiclean alternative.

They also make a liquid detergent that a lot of people love.

Dr. Bronners is a liquid castile soap, it has so many uses! From laundry to hand soap, to dish soap and mopping! Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of soap for a regular load of laundry. Plain white vinegar can be added to the rinse cycle as a softener and disinfectant.

Ingredients Matter is who we have to thank for doing the 1,4 dioxide testing on the various laundry products! They go plastic-free with powerful cleaning products. They have a laundry soap free of  detergents like sulfates, glucosides and ethoxylates, fragrances, and of course 1,4 dioxide.

They also have a stain remover stick!

Grab Green makes a powdered bleach alternative. They use plants and minerals to form an effective cleaning power.

Also check out their dishwasher pods for a fragrance free dish option!

Some people really love Tide. If you are one of these people who just can't give it up, there is hope for a better option that will still get the job done. Go for the hygienic clean 10X power free pods for a better option with Tide.

I love Esembly washing powder. I cloth diaper and this is my go-to. I also got their agitator balls to throw in the wash machine to give the diapers some extra scrubbing power. I needed help in the beginning trying to figure out my wash routine and their customer service was absoluty amazing...I mean they wanted pictures of poopy diapers to help solve my problems haha!

I also found the Esembly fitted diaper and covers to be my favorite setup.

Puracy makes a stain remover that is clean, it is safe for baby too, always go unscented. They actually have 2 stain removers, that are the same thing, but one has a "baby" label on it. They are the same ingredients. They also make a refill bag for the puracy stain remover so after you buy the spray bottle originally, you can refill it with the refill bag option, to save on cost and plastic.

Wool dryer balls replace dryer sheets, they help to cut down drying time and eliminate static. But if your clothes are coming out staticy, it's a sign they are being over dried - try drying for a shorter period of time.

Because I mentioned that I wear a lot of wool, I should also show you what I use to wash my wool. I love this Eucalan wool wash. It has directions for hand or machine washing. It contains lanolin, which is the oil that sheep naturally produce and what their wool is coated in. It only makes sense to add this back to our wool clothing, to make it soft. I personally choose the eucalyptus scent to try to prevent moth damage. But there is also an unscented version.
